R&B Singer whose I Feel for You version of Prince is an enormous hit. I Feel for You by Rufus. It is an enormous success. The singer is also leader of Rufus. Khan was brought up as a Catholic. She was educated at Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church's primary school. She attributed her love of music to her mother who introduced her to jazz as an infant. Khan was a rhythm and blues fan as a preteen. When she was eleven she was a member of the Crystalettes together with her sister Taka. The late 1960s saw the formation of the Crystalettes. Khan was a frequent attendee at protests for civil rights with her father's second wife Connie who was a staunch fan of the movement. She also became a member of the Black Panther Party after befriending a fellow member activist and Chicago born Fred Hampton in 1967. A lot of people believe that she earned the name Chaka in the Panthers but Khan claims it was Yoruba Baba who gave her that name at thirteen when she joined the party for the first time. She left in 1969 the Panthers and dropped out of high school, having previously gone to Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She began singing in small groups throughout the Chicagoland region. The first group was the Cash McCall's Lyfe group was comprised of Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan got married in 1971.
